2017-18 NBA news and notes
« on: September 30, 2017, 03:41:58 pm »
Believe it or not, the NBA preseason begins tonight in (very fittingly) Oakland, Calif.  When you have news or an opinion about the Association this season, leave it here.  As per usual, stay respectful of everybody else.
Know y'all been patiently waiting
I know you need me, I can feel it
I'm a beast, I'm an animal
I'm that monster in the mirror
The headliner, finisher
I'm the closer, winner
Best when under pressure
With seconds left I show up
If you really want more, scream it out louder

I feel like tonight's schedule will make the suits at Turner Sports bust a nut because we have some loaded match-ups.  Here is the Opening Night schedule.

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at 8 p.m.
Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors tonight at 10:30 p.m.

It's almost like the league planned to have the season open with the two best teams in the East from last year, and two of the top 3 teams from the West playing each other! Talk about a coincidence! Now, someone please take away my exclamation point key before I over use it! Oops, it might already be too late!

So much for a happy homecoming, though I wasn’t expecting one.  The Celtics’ Kyrie Irving’s Cleveland return started with loud boos and ended with a missed game-tying three at the buzzer in a 102-99 loss to the Cavaliers.

Plus, Gordon Hayward's ankle snapped like a toothpick (seriously, don't look at it if you've got the slightest bit of a weak stomach). I'm sure there are some Jazz fans out there that are feeling a little karmic retribution for the knife he gave them over the summer.

Is it wrong that I can watch that and not throw up?  It was disgusting nonetheless.  Regardless of if you're a Jazz fan or not, you hate to see that happen.

Boy, that escalated quickly.  Draymond Green got thrown to the ground by Bradley Beal, sparking a fight between the Warriors and Wizards.  Updates to come.

And the Warriors beat the Wizards, 120-117.

Here we go again.  The Warriors’ Kevin Durant and the Thunder’s Russell Westbrook went at it as they talked trash to each other.  Updates to come.

And the Thunder beat the Warriors, 108-91.

So a historic event on Tuesday as for the first time in his entire career, LeBron James was ejected from a game after a personal foul. For the record, James went 1082 games before getting the boot.

It’s not every day a team retires two numbers for the same player, but we’re not talking about any ordinary player.  Kobe Bryant delivered an emotional speech as his Nos. 8 and 24 jerseys took their place among Lakers greats.  Updates to come.

And the Warriors beat the Lakers, 116-114, in overtime.

It's the game we've all been waiting for.  LeBron James and Kevin Durant will add another chapter to the rivalry as the Cavaliers and Warriors will clash in a Finals rematch.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  That was a fun game.  The Warriors defeated the Cavaliers, 99-92, in a Finals rematch.  Durant had 25 points and James had 20 points.

This comes as a minor surprise to me.  According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Bucks fired head coach Jason Kidd.  Kidd was 139-152 in four seasons.  Updates to come.

And the Bucks beat the Suns, 109-105.

A team that was considered a bit of a dark horse contender coming into the season, is basically .500 and hanging at the back of the playoff picture in a weak Eastern Conference at midseason, and has one of the best players in the league, really not that surprising that the coach would eat a bullet for it. Especially since they already tried trading for Eric Bledsoe to spark things.

The Mount Rushmore of the NBA added a new face.  The Cavaliers’ LeBron James became the youngest player in NBA history to score 30,000 points.  Updates to come.

And the Spurs beat the Cavaliers, 114-102.

The All-Star Game has taken shape.  The rosters drafted by Cavaliers small forward LeBron James and the Warriors' Stephen Curry were announced.  James took Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving, the Warriors' Kevin Durant and the Thunder's Russell Westbrook.  Updates to come.

The Thunder beat the Wizards, 121-112.
The Warriors beat the Timberwolves, 126-113.
