2016-17 NHL news and notes
« on: September 24, 2016, 11:02:09 pm »
The puck drops today in St. Louis for the preseason of the NHL.  For all the big news or the opinions of others, this is your place to go.  Just remember to keep it civil and enjoy the action on the ice.

What a thriller tonight in Ottawa!  The Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews, the 2016 No. 1 overall pick, had a historic NHL debut by scoring four goals in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Senators.

I don't know how I feel about the name, but my ideas would be too related to gambling.  The NHL's new Las Vegas franchise unveiled the Golden Knights nickname ahead of its debut in the 2017-18 season.

Saturday's New Years Eve game is going to be one for the history books, as the Minnesota Wild (12 game win streak) and the Columbus Blue Jackets (14 game win streak) are due to face off.

No word as of yet if the game will be moved to a Primetime of National game. But exciting none the less, to those of us in market.

Can't say I'm surprised considering how badly the Flames play at the Honda Center (though tonight's game was not there), but their season is kaput after the Ducks won tonight, 3-1, to sweep the series, 4-0.

The champs are moving onward as the Penguins dispatched the Blue Jackets, 5-2, to take the series, 4-1.  In the big surprise, the Predators finished off the division champion Blackhawks, 4-1, to complete the sweep, 4-0.

It was Elimination Saturday today.  The Blues survived against the Wild, 4-3, in overtime and took the series, 4-1, setting the stage for a showdown with the Central rival Predators beginning on Wednesday in St. Louis.  The Rangers stunned the Canadiens, 3-1, winning that series, 4-2.  The Oilers continued to roll by defeating the Sharks, 3-1, to advance, 4-2, for a showdown with the Pacific rival Ducks beginning on Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif.

You really had to sweat out the action today, but the second round is all set.  The Senators knocked off the Bruins, 3-2, in overtime to clinch the series, 4-2, setting up a battle with the Rangers beginning on Thursday in Ottawa.  The Capitals survived against the Maple Leafs, 2-1, in overtime to win that series, 4-2, giving us a matchup with the Metropolitan rival Penguins beginning on Thursday in Washington and, more important, the desired Alexander Ovechkin vs. Sidney Crosby playoff battle.

Who would've thought the first team to make the conference finals would be the bottom Wild Card team in the West?  The Predators dispatched the Blues, 3-1, to advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time ever, 4-2.

Could this be the year Canada finally ends its Stanley Cup drought?  The Senators knocked off the Rangers, 4-2, to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, 4-2.

One team lived up to its Game 7 expectations, another beat them.  The Penguins got the Capitals to fizzle out again, 2-0, to clinch the series, 4-2, for a showdown with the Senators beginning on Saturday in Pittsburgh.  Meanwhile, the Ducks held off the Oilers, 2-1, winning the series, 4-3, to match up against the Predators beginning on Friday in Anaheim, Calif.
