2016-17 college football news and notes
« on: August 25, 2016, 11:00:13 pm »
Can you believe that the most wonderful time of the year is back?  Believe it, it's back as the college football season begins tonight in Sydney, of all places.  Here's the Opening Night schedule on the road to the CFP.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at California Golden Bears tonight at 10 p.m.

There you go making my heart beat again
Heart beat again, heart beat again
There you go making me feel like a kid
Won't you do it and do it one time
There you go pulling me right back in
Right back in, right back in
And I know I'm never letting this go
I'm stuck on you
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh

It's Week 1 and we've already seen a kick-six.  An amazing missed field goal return spanning the length of the field extended No. 15 Houston's lead over No. 3 Oklahoma.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  How is this for a stunner to start the year?  Oklahoma was upset by Houston, 33-23.  It was the Cougars' first win against a top-three team since 1984.

Some people just can't handle losing with class.  A No. 5 LSU offensive lineman was ejected for a vicious cheap shot after Wisconsin made the game-clinching interception.  The Tigers were upset, 16-14.

It's time for a battle between two of the best college football teams of all-time.  No. 1 Alabama is facing No. 20 USC at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in the first meeting between the schools since 1985.  Which team will come away with the win?  Updates to come.

And Alabama beat USC, 52-6.

If you were crying during the game, that's perfectly okay.  Nebraska honored late punter Sam Foltz by lining up with 10 men and taking an intentional delay of game.  This came as the Cornhuskers beat Fresno State, 43-10.

Also incredible class by Fresno to decline the penalty as well.

As if this matchup wasn't sexy enough, we get bonus football!  No. 10 Notre Dame is tied with Texas, 37-37, heading to overtime and the Fighting Irish's DeShone Kizer has five total touchdowns.  Who will walk away with the win?  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  What a thriller tonight in Austin!  Texas' Tyrone Swoopes scored the game-winning touchdown to upset Notre Dame, 50-47, in double overtime.  He was mobbed by his teammates in the end zone.

No mention of the blocked xp giving ND 2 points to tie the game?

What a thriller today in Stillwater!  Central Michigan scored an amazing touchdown on a Hail Mary and lateral on the final play to upset No. 22 Oklahoma State, 30-27.

That was just as bad, if not worse than, the Butt Fumble.  A South Carolina State Bulldogs kick returner flipped the ball to the ref in the end zone before taking a knee and No. 5 Clemson jumped on it for a touchdown.  Updates to come.

And Clemson beat South Carolina State, 59-0.

I'm about to use the word "upset" very loosely.  No. 10 Louisville upset No. 2 Florida State, 63-20.  That is tied for the third-largest loss ever by an AP top-two team.

What the flying crap was that garbage?  A No. 3 Ohio State wide receiver made an unreal circus catch on the back of a No. 14 Oklahoma defender while falling out of bounds for a touchdown.  Updates to come.

And Ohio State beat Oklahoma, 45-24.

Oh, instant replay, you cruel mistress.  No. 18 LSU had a dramatic last-second touchdown catch in the back of the end zone waved off in an 18-13 upset loss to Auburn.

It's the end of an era in Baton Rouge.  According to reports, LSU fired head coach Les Miles, who had a 114-34 record in 12 seasons.  The Tigers named defensive line coach Ed Orgeron was named interim head coach.

What a thriller today in Athens!  No. 11 Tennessee defeated No. 25 Georgia, 34-31, on a 43-yard Hail Mary touchdown as time expired, bringing Volunteers head coach Butch Jones to tears.
